About The Phil Langran Band:

  • Genres:
  • Rock
  • Folk
  • Country

Nottingham songwriter Phil Langran’s songs are engaging, literate and accessible. His talented and versatile band – Phil (vocals and acoustic guitar), Steve Benford (acoustic guitar, banjo, vocals), Mark Walker (bass, vocals), Frank McCarthy (electric guitar, vocals) and Alistair Bloomfield (fiddle) – creates a unique sound firmly rooted in folk, while interweaving elements of American, Celtic, blues and jazz traditions. Like all the best songwriters, Phil has created his own genre, where Harlem nights and New York cityscapes rub shoulders with the West Coast of Ireland and the landscape of the heart.

In recent years Phil has extended his range to include settings of poems by a number of twentieth century authors. His first steps in this direction resulted in an album of poems by the noted Harlem writer, Langston Hughes. Released on Nottingham’s Folkwit label in 2011 “Jukebox Love Songs, Leaving Blues, Border Crossings and Lovers’ Laments” features settings of some of Hughes’ most lyrical pieces alongside three originals by Langran. A Nottingham Post review noted, "It is a testimony to Langran's song-writing that, without prior knowledge, it would be impossible to separate his compositions from those of Hughes.”

The band’s latest recording is a four-song EP of Phil Langran originals, “Still the Heart”, released in October 2014 on the Folkwit label. Since its formation in 2010 the band has gained a reputation for its musicality, the warmth and wit of its live performances, and its versatility in both acoustic and amplified contexts. With lyrical songs, a unique sound and an engaging stage presence, the Phil Langran Band makes a powerful and distinctive addition to any festival programme.
